I have had the chance over the past three years of leading Mrs. Rush, along with twenty or so of the nicest, sweetest, little old ladies that you've ever met in your entire life, in a weekly Bible study on Wednesday nights. We meet in the dining room of "The Bayberry", a retirement inn here in Greenwood, SC.

Now, I've never really known anyone that was one hundred years old. She was a year old when the Wright brothers made their famous flight at Kitty Hawk. She remembers what the first cars looked like. She is an avid collector of dolls and was even the Grand Marshall in her hometown parade. She was dressed to the hilt at her birthday party and reception held in December at a local church. There was a proclamation from our State Capitol recognizing her as our county's "most distinguished citizen." Flashbulbs were going off and everyone was there to celebrate her great accomplishment. I am constantly amazed at how sharp Mrs. Rush is. She knows her facts. She keeps up on her family and writes many letters. I refer to her as the "chairman of the board." Last week, she even played the piano as the ladies sang the large print hymns out of the hymn book. She didn't miss a note!

I take great encouragement from my association with this group at the retirement inn. They have been an inspiration to me. I don't know what it's like to be elderly. I know they suffer pain in their bodies. I know that arthritis and poor circulation can make even sitting still for an hour difficult sometimes. They've even had to endure a recent round of viral infections that swept across our state. But they come every week, and it's almost always guaranteed to be a wonderful experience. We begin by spending some time in song. Most of the time, I pull out my guitar, and we sing the hymns of old together. Songs like, "In the Sweet By and By," "Blessed Assurance," and "In the Garden." I've taken these hymns and put them in rotation in our worship service on Sundays. See, they influence me as much as I influence them.

I then try to prepare short Bible studies or encouraging devotionals that will speak to their hearts. The best times together always seem to happen when I just start asking them questions. They have so much to offer and I love to hear their stories. Two of the ladies grew up near each other and used to ride to school together in horse and buggy. One of their fathers had built a stable on the school grounds to tie up the horse during the day. This was also the mode of transportation to church. There's also a woman named Faith who resides there. Her mother must have loved the thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians, because Ms. Faith has sisters named Charity, Hope and Joyce Peace. She likes to tell that her sister Charity always walked around saying she was the greatest (the verse says "and the greatest of these is Charity"). Another one of the ladies was a 5th grade school teacher for thirty years. Her father was a doctor who was killed when she was a young girl. He was riding in a coach behind a horse. When a passing train engineer blew the whistle, the horse bucked and her father was thrown from the coach and died. They all have interesting stories to tell. I don't have any grandmas left to tell me old stories. They are my adopted grandmas, and I listen closely now.

If you still have a wonderful gray haired lady or man around somewhere, will you do something for me? Take a video camera or a tape recorder and sit down and just start asking some questions. I can't tell you how I wish I could go back and sit down with Grandma Ellen or Grandma Dorothy or Mom, for that matter. If I could, I would fish out every ounce of information possible. We sometimes assume that they will be around forever. We get too busy or are afraid to impose. Perhaps you've heard all the stories before. Will you remember enough to pass along to your children's children? What about four or five generations from now? What will they know about generations that have come and gone?

Before I leave each week, I always try to remind Mrs. Rush and the rest of the ladies that they still have great purpose to their lives whether they know it or not. I tell them again that they are not put upon a shelf to collect dust. I encourage them to pray. I believe that grandmas have a direct line to God. When grandmas pray, good things happen. It's been a great pleasure spending time with them and I encourage you to spend time with the elderly ones that you have been blessed with. For time passes much too quickly and they will be gone much too soon.

Paul's note - I originally wrote these words in the spring of 2005. Mrs. Rush passed away May 30, 2007 at the age of 104. I count myself blessed to have known her. He along with Ahmet Ertegun and recording engineer whiz kid Tom Dowd made up the backbone of Atlantic Records. Atlantic was responsible for recording some of the best music ever put on tape/wax/etc. If you can ever find it on pay television or in your local music DVD rack, watch "Tom Dowd - The Language of Music" which gives a captivating behind the scenes look at Atlantic in it's prime.

Here's the story on Wexler from the Associated Press

(A.P.) NEW YORK - Legendary record producer Jerry Wexler, who helped shape R&B music with influential recordings of Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and other greats, and later made key recordings with the likes of Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, has died, said his son, Paul. He was 91.

Paul Wexler said his father died at a hospice in Sarasota, Fla., about 3:45 a.m. Friday of congenital heart disease; the death was first confirmed to The Associated Press by David Ritz, co-author of Wexler's 1993 memoir, "Rhythm and the Blues."

Both his son and daughter Lisa were present at the time of his death. Paul Wexler told the AP his father's death was "a tremendous loss."

"The number of artists that he was involved with and helped significantly or just made great records with, the list is almost unbelievable," Paul Wexler added. "And many of them are gone now."

Wexler earned his reputation as a music industry giant while a partner at Atlantic Records with another legendary music figure, the late Ahmet Ertegun. Atlantic provided an outlet for the groundbreaking work of African-American performers in the 1950s and 1960s. Later, it was a home to rock icons like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. He later helped Dylan win his first Grammy by producing his 1979 "Slow Train Coming" album.

Wexler helped boost the careers of both the "King of Soul," Charles, and the "Queen of Soul," Franklin. Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke and Percy Sledge were among the other R&B greats who benefited from Wexler's deft recording touch. He also produced Dusty Springfield's classic "Dusty in Memphis," considered a masterpiece of "blue-eyed" soul.

Burke said Wexler was the ultimate music man.

"He loved black music, R&B music and rhythm and blues was his foundation. He had a feeling for it, he had the knack to keep it going in his heart and recognize the talent that he felt was real," Burke told the AP after learning of his death. "Jerry Wexler didn't change the sound of America, he put the sound to the public. He open the doors and windows to the radio stations ... and made everybody listen."

Among the standards produced by Wexler: Franklin's "Respect," a dazzling, feminist reworking of an Otis Redding song; Sledge's deep ballad "When A Man Loves A Woman" and Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour," with a horn vamp inspired by Wexler's admittedly rhythmless dancing.
Wexler was named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

"No one really knew how to make a record when I started," he said in a profile on the rock hall's Web site. "You simply went into the studio, turned on the mike and said, `Play.'"
In the studio, Wexler was a hands-on producer. Once, during a session with Charles, the tambourine player was off the beat. Wexler, in his award-winning autobiography, recalled grabbing the instrument and playing it himself.

"Who's that?" asked Charles.

"Me," Wexler told the blind singer.

"You got it, baby!" Charles said.

The son of Polish immigrants and a music buff since his teens, Wexler landed a job writing for Billboard magazine in the late 1940s after serving in World War II and studying journalism in college. There he coined the term "rhythm and blues" for the magazine's black music charts; previously, they were listed under "race records."

While working at Billboard, Wexler befriended Ertegun — a life-altering friendship for both. Ertegun and a partner had started Atlantic, then a small R&B label in New York. In 1953, when Ertegun's partner left for a two-year military hitch, Wexler stepped in as the label's co-director.
He never left.

"In the early sessions, I just sat there watching (Ertegun) while I was cowering in fright," Wexler told The Associated Press in 2001. "But as time went on, we proved to be a very successful team. ... We went on the road together, we hung out together."

He recalled that Ertegun "wrote many of the songs in the early days, and he drew upon his knowledge of jazz and the blues, because songs always have to have a source. ... This is not to say that there is not great originality."

While Ertegun enjoyed the more bohemian aspects of the music business, Wexler was a working partner. Wexler produced 16 albums and numerous hit singles for Franklin, who switched to Atlantic in the mid-1960s and rediscovered her gospel roots after several unhappy years singing show tunes for Columbia. "When it came to the studio, you could say the two of us were joined at the hip," he once said.

Franklin, in a 1980 interview with Rolling Stone, said their collaborations were "among my favorite sessions. I feel the things we did together were dynamite."

In 1967, Wexler and Ertegun sold Atlantic to Warner Bros. for $17.5 million. Although they stayed on to run the company, the pair began moving in different directions.

Wexler began working with a collection of Southern musicians in the 1970s, including guitar genius Duane Allman, Dr. John, and Delaney & Bonnie. He also produced albums for Willie Nelson.

In the 1980s, Wexler worked with Dire Straits, Carlos Santana and George Michael. In April 1988, Atlantic marked its 40th anniversary with an 11-hour concert at Madison Square Garden, with the stage shared by performers from Crosby, Stills & Nash to the Bee Gees to Ben E. King.
Wexler was the quintessential Jewish street kid who found a home in black music. He was born in 1917 in Manhattan's Washington Heights section, north of Harlem. He didn't take to school, preferring to hang out at places like Artie's Pool Room on 181st Street.

In his teens, he began haunting Harlem's jazz clubs and record stores, developing a lifelong passion for jazz and blues.

When his mother tried to refocus his energies by sending him to Kansas State University in 1936, Wexler instead began taking the 100-mile drive to Kansas City, Mo., to see performers like Count Basie and Joe Turner. His poor grades put him back in New York within two years.
Days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Wexler was drafted into the Army. He spent the war stationed in Texas and Florida, then returned to college to earn a degree in journalism in 1947.

Here's the Atlantic recording of Mess Around (written by Ertegun)as a tribute to Wexler and his professional work. Good stuff.

Phat Phriday Phunnies

Paul's Funky Caption Contest - Week 9 - WINNERS!

First Place - Stop! Youth ministry is also very rewarding. My wife and I speak from experience. We spent just over a decade as youth leaders reaching out to young people. We have seen the unadulterated hunger of teens desperate for God to move in their midst, and we have had rebellious ones steal the medicine right from the cabinet over our bathroom sink at one of the many youth nights we hosted. As I mentioned last Sunday, we had the opportunity of helping to lead two teams of fifty teens to the Blackfoot Indian reservation in Montana and we've also questioned our sanity as we burned the midnight oil and dealt with the 3 a.m. attitudes during the proverbial "lock-in". Car washes, concert trips, waiting for parents to arrive, taking kids home; it was the best of times and sometimes it was a little stressful. However, I wouldn't trade away one minute of the experience nor the kids we have met and shared our lives with.

We learned some valuable lessons about what encouragement really means during our tenure under Pastors Tim & Lynda Rigdon at New Covenant Christian Center in Providence, Kentucky.

Everyday we have the opportunity to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ, whether we know it or not. People watch us and they watch our lives. They listen to the words that come out of our mouths. Jesus warned his disciples and followers of the power of the spoken word. He said in Matthew chapter 12, verse 36, "But I say unto you, that ever idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment." The word idle is the Greek term, "ergon", literally meaning a word that produces no good effect. Our words of encouragement should be life giving or "rhema" words to those around us. We should set our sights on giving out living words that assist in bringing forth good fruit in others. We know that the Lord gives the increase, but we can help to pull a few weeds or water the crop.

That was the nature of the youth ministry in Kentucky. We had a unique shot at reaching some kids who were looking for true and genuine love. You can tell a lot about a teen's home life by the way they act and react around you.

There were two middle-aged boys I will call John and Joey who were especially hungry for approval and love. John and Joey were like most other American middle-school teenagers. They loved playing video games, going to the mall, and weren't too hip on the whole idea of going to school. They came to our church on a Wednesday night at the invitation of a friend and after that, seemed to be in church every time the doors were open. Most of you know that youth ministry is NOT, and will NEVER BE an eight to five job. It is about nights, weekends and spending time with the kids. It is about coming to their school and bringing them McDonald's when all the other kids are eating a stale school lunch. It is about listening to their wants, their dreams and their hurts. It is all about relationships. That is what attracted these two boys to want to come to church and develop friendships with others in our youth group. We were simply showing them the unconditional love of Jesus.

Robin and I poured life into our kids every opportunity we had to be around them. This was only by the grace of God and through his strength. We complemented them on good work and corrected them when behavior sometimes slipped. Everything we did was rooted in the love of Christ. John and Joey drank up every drop of acceptance, approval and love that we were able to pour out. So much that they would even come by the house and bang on our back door in the middle of the night when everyone was in bed. I can remember walking to the back door, unlocking the deadbolt, and slowly opening the door to reveal two shadowy figures with ball caps turned backwards. Then a voice uttered these words I shall never forget. "Pastor Paul, can we hang out and do some guy stuff?" I, of course said, "No, go home and go to bed! We'll hang out and do guy stuff tomorrow!" That conversation really did take place and there were many more like it. "Pastor Paul, can we just go to the mall and play some games together some time?" These were the requests and I knew where they were coming from. When we are showing love and speaking life, it draws people. Jesus said, "If I be lifted up from the earth, I would draw all men unto me." Realize that we all crave the attention of the people that lift us up. We tend to run from those who bring us down. Been there, done that, made the t-shirt.

"Realize that we all crave the attention of the people that lift us up"

Joey, especially, was craving love like a starving child craves a morsel of food. This young man was in his early teens and was a product of a broken home living in a typical small town apartment/housing project. Joey's mother worked a full time job during the day and a part-time one in the evenings. This meant that Joey was basically raising himself. He got himself up in the morning and got himself to school. When he arrived home, he was alone and would have to get things for himself for the evening meal. I truly believe that he even tucked himself in on most nights. His home situation was not what it needed to be and it broke our hearts. That why he desired the love and was around us so much. We who were working with Joey and the other teens represented the heart of a loving heavenly Father to them.

It pains me to recall how I was called one afternoon from my job and told that Joey had "lost it" at school. He simply broke down and threatened a teacher and basically said "I can't take it anymore." He agreed to go to a mental institution over an hour away for evaluation on one condition. That was that Pastor Paul would drive him there. I can remember vividly that drive across the rolling hills of western Kentucky with the rain beating down on my windshield. I can remember Joey and I talking about baseball, church friends and mostly upbeat topics as we approached the facility. I escorted him to the room where he would be staying and then went and waited until his mother and her boyfriend arrived. I had a last moment alone with him. We prayed and cried, and I told him that God would have his hand upon him and protect him while he went through all the tests he was due to take.

I don't know what became of those two young men, but I pray that they are well. I thank God for the chance that we had to pour encouragement, life, acceptance, and love into so many. Next time you see a teenage with all their supposed bad attitudes, take a minute and look beyond the surface. They many need exactly what the Lord has equipped you to offer. Please be obedient. Don't pass them by.

Sauce Wars III

(Photo stolen from the Swell Guy)

Quite possibly the most exciting meal of my life took place Saturday night at the Z's house (Denine can give you the address) where Robin and I were honored to be guest judges for SAUCE WARS III. You can read a sauce by sauce account of the evening told beautifully by Mr. Z here.

Here are some further observations from this guest judge.

1. Preparation. I was giddy in anticipation of the event. I have read the descriptions of previous sauce wars with great interest and really felt more like I had a back stage pass to the Superbowl. I tried desperately to hide my excitement as to seem more cool, calm and collective but I think it was in vain. Swell Guy has rib cookin' down to a science. His watch is synchronized with his grill and I believe I saw him check both the wind and the direction of the sun at times while cooking. The multiple slabs he brought to the table were "the perfect canvas" for the application of the four sauces.

2. Technique. While there were a loose set of ground rules...it wasn't so strict as to make a judge nervous. I placed four ribs in four corners on the plate and then applied the four different sauces for the opening round. I cleansed my pallet between ribs with small portions of cole slaw and corn bread. I also drank water between ribs just to make sure I could get a good read for each individual sauce. As we began narrowing down sauces, I kept the same routine and felt I was objective as possible.

3. My take on the four candidates.

Dreamland - If it wasn't SAUCE WARS III and we only had this large mouthed bottle of sauce, it would have been a fine evening with great BBQ. You could certainly taste the vinegar and other flavoring spices. Swell Guy commented about this being like the "sauce of his youth" which I found endearing. This sauce was good, yet, quickly eliminated upon opening the other three bottles.

Melvins - A sweet and friendly sauce. It reminded me of the county fair or, as I was quoted, "kissing your sister on Easter morning". Melvins was certainly mustard based but not near the level of mustard as brother Maurices. The evening took an interesting turn when on a whim, I suggested that we do a brotherly battle between Maurices and Melvins. I actually divided one rib down the middle putting each of the Bessingers on either side. It was a fair test and I thought Melvins was the distinct winner between the two. While the ladies fell in love with the sweetness, the men were moving on to more dangerous ground.

Carolina Barbecue Shack - CBS is a local BBQ joint that I have a great affinity for. One of Swell Guy's rules is that the sauces cannot be national brands. They have to have local flair and I was proud to see that Furman Mauldin's sauce made it into the competition. CBS has a savory blend of sweet and spice that bites just a little and then soothes into wonderful flavor. I have no qualms in calling this sauce the overall winner, even though it's not the magic bottle that I fell in love with on this night.

Pappy's XXX White Lightning -
Here's what the Kentucky Bourbon wielding manufacturers have to say about Pappy's XXX

"We think the measure of a great sauce should be in the duration and variation of ingredient flavors. This sauce has an approximate two to two and a half seconds of fun bouncing around your taste buds. Starting with an initial sweetness that is then followed by notes of onion, garlic and worcestershire, about the time that you have discovered each of those flavors, along comes the distinct taste of habañero, and finishes with just a flash of southern fire. When you combine this much fun in packaging, with the quality of ingredients to boot, it's ALL THE LOVE YOU'LL EVER NEED!

I do love me some Pappy's. It certainly had a distinct bite. It's not a sissy sauce. It's not kissing your sister or dancing in PE sauce. It's more like dancing in a darkly lit blues filled room on Beale Street. The list of ingredients would make your head spin including....tomato sauce, sugar, vinegar, hot sauce, fresh garlic, fresh onion, chile pepper, paparika, modified food starch, natural hickory flavoring, Kentucky Bourbon, worcestershire, black pepper, spices, lemon powder, habanero pepper & citric acid.

This was my pick and I plan on ordering a bottle soon for my own enjoyment.

Many thanks to our hosts. We were honored to be there with the three of you and I look forward to the next round if you will have us.

8-8-08 and what time is it? Although I haven't been to Mathare, I had a chance to see parts of Kibera, another large slum area during my stay in Nairobi back in 2006 and can relate as she is beginning to describe her journey.

She is back home now.... her blog is worth following and reading. Her post today titled "Walking Trees" is amazing. Thank God for young people with passion and purpose. In the meantime, check out a few photos of cool stuff (including my childhood Saturday morning super duo of Shazam and Isis)!

Paul's Funky Caption Contest - Week 8 -

Please leave a comment with your best caption for the following photo.
